WHERE YOU CAN WORK IN THE NT
We have roles across the state, from larger centre's like Darwin and Alice Springs to smaller settlements with fewer services like Tennant Creek and Kings Canyon – or remote health posts and bush clinics that are rich in Indigenous heritage. Wherever you go, you'll get valuable experience, make a real difference and have memories to cherish for life!
Central Australia isn’t for everyone – and that’s exactly the point. This is a big, raw landscape, where experienced nurses step into roles that demand independence, confidence, and strong clinical judgement. Between shifts, you’re surrounded by some of Australia’s most iconic experiences – Uluru at sunrise, Kings Canyon hikes, and remote gorges across the Red Centre. You’ll also work closely with local communities, connecting with rich Aboriginal culture and gaining insight into life in some of the country’s most remote settings. It’s challenging, hands-on work that builds real capability – and an experience that stays with you long after the contract ends.
East Arnhem Land and the North-East is something else entirely – remote, wild, and deeply connected to culture. These placements suit experienced nurses who are confident in their uniqie skillset and open to a very different way of life. Outside of work, you’ll be exploring pristine beaches like Turtle Beach, fishing in some of the best waters in the country, and spending time on Country with local communities – learning traditions, stories, and daily practices firsthand. It’s immersive, meaningful work in a truly unique setting – building not just your skills, but your perspective as a clinician and as a person.
Katherine is where things open up – warm weather, big skies, and a strong connection to both nature and community. It’s a great fit if you're an experienced nurses who is comfortable stepping into diverse, often remote clinical settings. Time off here could mean swimming at Edith Falls, kayaking through Nitmiluk Gorge, or relaxing in the Katherine Hot Springs. You’ll also experience the region’s rich Aboriginal culture through local communities, art, and events. It’s hands-on, varied work in a setting that keeps things interesting – building your capability while giving you a genuine taste of life in the Top End.
What skills and experience do you need?
You'll need the right experience, skills, and a sense of adventure for these types of roles – and the ability to think on your feet. A love for adventure and a passion for making a difference are also a must!
Regional roles are in well-equipped facilities, serving communities in vibrant towns. Here you will need a minimum of two years of clinical experience after graduating. Additional certifications are a bonus but not essential. For rural and remote roles you will need more experience in primary health clinics and small rural facilities. Additional certifications and/or training are also often required to be eligible.
